Hi
I am 61 years old. Ht. 170 cms. Wt. 73 kgs medium build, no paunch, South Indian, Vegetarian, Family man, don't smoke or drink, generally keep me busy, active, but a little stress since I am what is known as Type A personality. I am recently diagnosed with Diabetes. On the date of testing,i.e. 21/11/2013,My fasting blood sugar level was 153 mg/dl, PP was 187 mg/dl. Hb A1 C test showed 6.5%. My lipid profile was as follows. Total Cholesterol: 290 mg/dl. HDL: 45 mg/dl. LDL: 206 mg/dl., VLDL: 39 mg/dl Triglycerides: 194 mg/dl. I have been prescribed tablets for keeping blood sugar under check and for reduction of Cholesterol levels.

Now please suggest a diet plan for me in South Indian foods and list of foods to be totally avoided, foods to be eaten moderately, foods those can be eaten liberally.

I will appreciate your suggestions,

Thanks & Regards,
S. Narayanan.

Here is the list

Take all vegetables except potatoes, yams and turnips. take these three vegetables in moderation( 2-3 times a month)
In fruits avoid mangoes, dates, grapes, bananas( if your glucose level is under control you are allowed to take 1-2 slice of mango, handful of grapes, 1/2 banana but can't take dates. One more thing you can take only two servings of fruits in a day. You are allowed to eat apples, peaches, guava, strawberry, apricots(3-4 in number), melon and water melon( 1 slice in a day), pomegranate ( 1 small size), tangerine/orange( 1 small size in a day)
Take boiled rice once a week( remove starch)
Avoid carbonated beverages, even you are not allowed to take sugar free drinks. Avoid Bakery products. Can take sugar free biscuits. Do 30 minutes brisk walk daily as this will help in controlling your glucose level.
