Suffering From Stomach Flu, Breaking Out Itchy Hives, Vomiting. Gave Benedryl. Medical Check Up Required?

My son is 9 and has what can be described as the stomach flu/virus. He is now breaking out with itchy hives . No to low grade fever . Has vomitted several times. We have given him Benedryl orally. He has had Pedialylte but threw it up. Ate chicken broth, banana, and saltines... all have come back up. This is now 24 hrs since onset. Does this warrent an ER trip?

Hi and thank you for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your son has been experiencing.

If the vomiting is such that nothing can stay in the stomach, then I am concerned he can easily get dehydrated. This is something we should avoid as it is the most feared complication of vomiting. If he feels very weak, urinates less, feels thirst always and has sunken eyes, then you should take him to the ER.If these are absent and he is relatively stable, you may want to try feeding him again. But if these symptoms should appear, please take him in.

Hope this answers your query fully. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask them. I wish your son a speedy recovery.
