Suffering From Polymyositis. Had Knee Surgery. Mother, Sister Having Similar Weakness. Is This Hereditary?

I have Polymyositis, as all the blood tests imply. My mother and sister have similar weaknesses and poor balance. Is it hereditary for all of us, or could I have gotten it 2 yrs after having a knee replacement.???? I'm taking 5 mg of Prednisone and it helps but I have trouble walking any distance except in the house.

Is Inclusion Body Myositis the only one that is supposedly inherited ?

hello,
Cause of polymyositis is unknown but not heriditary it is said that abnormal immunological factor are responsible for least part of attack against muscle tissue. In order to develop polymyositis different genetic factors and environmental factors must combine. And thats the reason why its said rare to be heriditary. And coming to the inclusionalbody myositis it is not spread to children of ibm patients but they predispose the person to get ibm.The chance of getting polymyositis after knee replacement is also rare but may be a riskfactor but not the cause.Thank you.
