Sudden acute chest pain, occurs on moving and breathing. Due to excessive smoking?

Hello, i am a 28 year old male, ive been smoking for around 10 years now. After a very long night last saturday i woke up with a very sharp and acute pain in my lower right chest . When i turn or lie down in a certain way ti hurts, and also when i take deep breaths or yawn. I felt around the spot with my finger and i feel no pain. It only hurts when I take deep breaths or make certain movements. Any advice will be greatly appreciated?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
Common causes of chest pain as you describe could certainly be either of pulmonary origin or cardiac origin. Pulmonary causes could be chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pleuritis or a pneumonia. Smoking predisposes you to develop respiratory infections, emphysema and lung cancer. Cardiac causes like pericarditis and angina pectoris could mimic these presentations. A chest X ray could be necessary to make this distinction and orient on prescription of other investigations like sputum exams and bronchoscopies, endoscopic exams of the lung trees if necessary. I suggest you consult a pulmonologist for a proper evaluation.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
