Hi, my son is a healthy 15 year old (16 next month) - very active in all sports, plays high level hockey, is a soccer referee, happy, great at school, but he does say he's feeling overwhelmed (stressed) lately with school and has been working really hard on math. A few times over the course of several weeks he has complained of blurred vision and change/loss in peripheral vision in both eyes. He describes his vision as "weird." No floaters or eye pain - blurriness is overall - not just short or long distance. Today it started right after phys ed class where he exerted himself to his maximum (but that's not unusual). It's been about 1/2 hour and his eyes have improved but now he has a headache which could be related to the eye strain of trying to focus his blurred vision. I am a med complex paeds nurse. The first thing I did was check his blood glucose - normal. He has no other neurological symptoms - no dizziness, numbness, no weakness anywhere, no abnormality in eye movement, etc. Last visit to the optometrist (approx. 1 year ago) - vision was better than perfect.
Is it possible for the season ++ pollen to cause his vision to go blurry? (Gym class was NOT outside). He is not diagnosed with allergies however I have noted a bit of sneezing and a little sinus congestion (blowing nose) with him (but he hasn't complained at all). Have you ever heard of this with over exertion? If so, why would this happen? Please advise - I don't want to over react but need your thoughts. Last physical was approx 1.5 years ago - all normal including bloodwork.
