Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My five month old grandson is being worked up for hershburgers. Since birth he spits up and vomits a lot and has had difficulty having bowel movements on his own. He s a good weight at seventeen lb but loses probably two ounces after each feeding . Parents have added cereal to the bottle to add thickness. He had a barium enema yesterday and they await results. Does this sound like hershburgers?
Dear Enquirer I think you are meaning "HIRSPRUNG DESEASE." I think it will be helpful if I shortly discuss this condition. This is a disorder of the gut which is from birth. Here the nerves are missing in the part of the bowel and as a result in the gut a rhythmic contraction and dilatation a movement called peristalsis by which contents(food and waste)are propelled along the lumen is absent causing obstruction leading to swelling of the abdomen and bowel. It usually present with difficulties with bowel movement, severe constipation, infrequenr explosive bowel movement, vomitting , diarrhoea, jaundice. Investigation includes serial anal manometry(checking anal pressure) x-ray of the abdomen, Barium enema and rectal biopsy. The treatment is removal abnormal section of the bowel and to put healthy part of the colon to be attached with the anus. Prior to that usually colostomy (a surgically established communication between colon and surface of the abdomen, a type of stroma that discharges faeces)is done.Kindest regards.
