Sore Throat And Swollen Glands, Cold, Flu, Viral. Is It Strep? Will It Get Worse?

My son has a terrible sore throat and swollen glands. He went to the doctor on Monday and she did a strep test. It was negative. However he has gotten worse and can not talk. I gave him Mucinex for cold, flu and sore throat, but I am a little concerned that it has gotten worse. She said it was viral, so there is nothing he can take. Should I take him back to the doctor or is it normal for it to get worse. Is there anything he can do for it? He doesn't get sick very often, but when he has, it has typically been strep, but it hasn't been this bad when it was strep.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Your son is having acute upper respiratory tract infection, viral or bacterial.
As there is no improvement after few days, an antibiotic medicine and anti-inflammatory medicines course might require.
Consult your doctor and take his opinion.
Avoid giving cold drinks and junk food.
Ok and takecare.
