Sore Ankle, Swelling, Pain. Have Colitis. Prescribed Percocet. Your Opinion?

My sister has had a sore ankle since she was 18. It swells up for a couple months then spreads to her knee then the swelling goes down after a couple months but the pain never leaves. She has colitis and the doctor she seen here in kirkland lake said that the pain in her ankle and knee is probably arthritis because colitis and arthritis go hand in hand. She has never seen a specialist nor has she been properly diagnosed. She has been limping since she is 18 and is now 30 years old. She does not want to see the doctor anymore because he keeps wanting her to take Percocet and she does not want to take any type of pain killer that is addictive. What is your opinion on the matter? Will it get worse if not treated? Should she worry about her daughter having the same problem?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,

From your question I come to know that your sister has been suffering from Ankle and knee joint pain and swelling since age of 18yrs till today, that is for 12 yrs and she also suffers from colitis,
The picture points towards a a type of arthritis (Joint Swelling) known as Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy in which there is affection of joints and colon both. Joints like knee/ankle/elbow or wrist swell up and pain and may resolve on its own or may not completely resolve. In colon, it may cause bleeding stools/ change in stool consistency/ frequency also.
This kind of arthritis is progressive and gradually worsens with age.
There are various kinds of blood tests like HLA B27/ ESR etc. available to find exact type of arthritis.
I feel you should consult a Rheumatologist for a correct diagnosis and who can give her a treatment which is far better than pain killers and work well too probably make her relieve her joint and colitis problems totally.
If the rheumatologist feels like than he may consult a orthropaedic surgeon like me or / and a gastroenterologist to have a complete treatment.
I hope this answers to your question and helps you and your sister.
God Bless you
Regards
Dr Merchant
