Smoking weed, denies help. What can help?

Hello Doctor, My son aged about 24 years, have been smoking weeds from past 18 months or so, but we came to know past 03 months ? We explained the harmful effects to him but he debates that it is not harmful at all and in turn tells us that his thoughts are very open after smoking weed and can explore more and the work I can do will be much better than others? Do not want to meet a doctor and tells us that he thinks too big than others, whose thoughts are very small and meager? We are staying in Bangalore? Please help ?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Your concerns about your son's marijuana use are valid.

Marijuana is a psychoactive substance, which can produce significant psychological effects by acting on the brain. Hence, marijuana abuse has been associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders like anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, psychosis, mood instability, etc.

So, you can tell your son that it's not a question about being "open-minded" or not, but a question of the possible riks and harmful consequences these drugs can cause. However, without proper motivation from your son's side, it is difficult to help him. So, try to motivate him to see a psychiatrist for a discussion and considering further management options.
