Small Child, Stool Stains On Underwear. Due To Constipation Or Poor Hygiene?

My 7 yr old daughter has had major poop stains in her underwear for 12 months now. We ve stressed wiping properly and even demonstrate how (moist toilet tissue etc). From reading I take it this is either constipation where she thinks poop is going to hurt if she goes so she s holding in, just bad hygiene which would be frustrating because we have emphasized that, or something else? Help, this is getting serious and I don t want her to get made fun of in school.

Hello there,

Since your daughter is already 7 years old, this problem needs to be addressed seriously. This condition is known as Encopresis and is a cause of concern if it is seen beyond 5 years of age. Also the problem has persisted for 12 months now.

As a mother, you need to take her into confidence and ask her she has a personal problem. Whether she is under any stress or has problems in school are very important factors that need to be brought to notice. Kindly assess her food and fluid intake and see if her diet is low if fibre.

No, its not just bad hygiene thats causing all the problems. Constipation itself creates a vicious cycle
that results in fecal soiling. So your child needs lot of attention, care and good toilet training in this regard. Remember the results will not be immediate.

It can be painfully slow. But get a Pediatric consultation and rule out any organic disorder.

Wishing your child a speedy recovery.
