Small Child, Loose Stools, Vomiting. Prescribed Ondem For Vomiting, Ambrodil For Loose Stools. Correct Medication?

Hello Doc, My 10 months old child is suffering from Loose Motions & has vomited once 3 days back. Since we were out of town we called our doctor & asked for the medicine for the same. He prescribed Ondem Syrup for Vomiting & Ambrodil S for Loose Motions. But my child is still having loose motions & is passing after every feeding. Since we are not able to contact our doctor please let me know if the above mentioned medicines sufficient or we should change it. Also would be great help if you can throw some light on the precautions in feeding during such times. Thanks

Hi
Ondem syrup can be used for vomitings. Ambrodil S syrup is for cough and is not for loose motions. For loose motions you can add one probiotic, zinc supplementation and give sips of oral rehydrating solutions (WHO ORS) in eual amounts to the losses in loose stools to prevent dehydration and consult any other Pediatrician near by for further management. During travelling you should be careful in the preparation of infant food. You should clean hands before preparation and utensils should be clean and water should be safe and outside food should not be given to infants.

Hi

Your child is having gastroenteritis- infection of the gut- which is most commonly due to virus.
Onden syrup is for vomiting. You may give it 3 times a day as per the recommended dose.

Ambrodil-s is a cough medicine and you may give it if he has a moist cough.

There are no safe medicines to stop loose stools immediately in kids.
You should just be careful that your child does not get dehydrated.

Give him plenty of fluids- plain water, ORS, Vegetable soups, porridge. If he is on breastfeeds, continue it. Avoid fruit juices, formula milk. cow`s milk for few days.
Give him rice based food/ mashed potato/ banana etc.
Give him plenty of curd- which is very good during loose stools.

Be sure that he passes urine atleast 4 to 5 times in a day.
You may also give him probiotic sachets- like Econorm- about 1/2 of the sachet twice a day for 5 days. This will help in reducing the frequency and duration of loose stools.
With these he will get okay in about 3 to 4 days.

If at any point of time, his oral intake is very less/ he is tired and lethargic/ urine frequency is very less/ develops a high grade fever/ passes blood in stools- you should see a pediatrician immediately.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish a speedy recovery for your kid.
