Skin sensitivity, tenderness in lower back, unable to lie on back. Suggestions?

My boyfriend asked me to look online to see if i can figure out what is going on with him. For two days now he has been experiencing skin sensitivity and tenderness in his lower back. There is no rash or sign of skin changes. He has been avoiding laying on his back because his skin hurts. What could this be? Does he need to be seen?

Thanks for writing in.
The condition can be skin related or bone related. It can be due to herpes zoster or furuncle.
A bacterial infection or furuncle over back can cause pain and inability to lay on back.A visit to your primary physician will help to diagnose and treat the condition.
Hope this helps.
