Skin On Fingertips Bleeds After Hardening And Splitting Causing Extreme Pain. What Could It Associated With?

The skin on my fingertips hardens, then splits and bleeds--very painful and sensitive. It may take a month or two to completely heal. It doesn t seem to be associated with cold weather, as it happens in the summer, too. It has happened on and off for about 15 years. Do you have an idea what might be causing this?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi,
I can understand your concern for the fingertips bleeding after hardening and splitting.

After reading the query, in my opinion it appears to be Hand eczema with allergic dermatitis. In this condition there are eruptions along with moderate itching and in more aggravated cases there is appearance of more redness. In this condition a thorough history of contact allergens are to be taken and accordingly a specific diagnostic technique known as patch test is to be undertaken.

I suggest you to apply medium to high potency steroid cream application such as mometasone or clobetasol cream.

Apply plenty of moisturizers with least of fragrance in it for at least 7-8 times.

Take care.
