Should The Child Discontinue Medication If Having Nosebleeds After Taking Amoxicillin For Tonsilitis?

My son is taking amoxicillin for tonsilitus. He is 4-1/2 years old weighs 36 lbs. He has been prescribed 150 mL 3 X daily of 5 mL and is on day 6. He has had 4 nosebleeds within this time, although not a lot he feels it coming down and askes me if his nose is bleeding. I believe it is due to the medication. His tonsilitus seems to be gone now. Should he discontinue the medication?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Amoxicillin does not cause nasal bleed. That might be due to some other reasons. Digital trauma being the most common cause in children and if tonsilitis has subsided you can go ahead and stop the medicine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ravi Mendha
