Should I Still Be Concerned If My Test Is Negative For HIV?

Hi Doc...
Please help me.. m going crazy almost suicidal.

I had an unprotected sexual encounter with a girl whom I met on Nov 1 and 2 of 2013. During the process I had a slight cut on my foreskin and she was in the final days of her periods.

Things were fine. She seems to be 'neat' as she says she has sex only with her boyfriend at least that's what she says.

On Dec 21 I fell sick with 92°C fever and slight cough which went away with tablets. Later after reading a lot of post on HIV..I decided to get tested and yesterday that is on the 20th Jan (exactly after 81 days) and the result was negative.

I am happy but should I get tested again? It's a nerve wrecking process and I am so depressed. I did not have any other symptoms mentioned on the net at least not like what the images look like on the net.

I fear cause I went to a local lab and they say they are authorised. I checked with them more than 3 times about the authenticity of the report and they say they are 100 percent that I am HIV negative.

How can I trust them? Should I go to a bigger hospital than just a diagnostic center? And what would you recommend doctor.. should I check again in a better hospital and if yes I am planning to go this Saturday which will be the 86th day.

What are the possibilities? How tensed should I be? Please please please help me doc. Please!

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

Almost all the test kits marketed to detect HIV are highly sensitive and specific for HIV up to 98% reliablity whether it is a small laboratory or a big laboratory. Negative in two different types of test makes it 100 % reliable. A negative test after 81 days nearing 12 weeks is almost conclusive. If you have one more negative test after 12 weeks with a different kit well and good . Then there is no Possibility of HIV due to that high risk activity provided that kit covers both HIV 1 and 2.
Wish you good luck.
