Should I Go For C-section If Internal Os Is Closed At 38 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

Hi my wife is already passed 38weeks but till today she don’t had any labor pain nor the internal os is opened. Doctors was in hurry for the Caesarean operation but we hold them to do so. Previous doctors has given her Pain Killer tablets is because of this she is not having a labor pain. Later we do the sonography & we know that EDD was 05.01.2011 & 25.01.11, so please suggest should we wait for th Os to be opened or should we go for the Caesarean & also suggest exercise to open the Internal OS.Presently we are asking her to do stairs up down with 5-10kgs weight in her hand is it ok?Please comment waiting for your prompt reply Regards Rahul

Hi Rahul,

Is this your wife's first pregnancy? How is your baby's health? How is your wife doing? Does she have diabetes, Hypertension or any other problem?

Why does her obstetrician want to do the cesarean?
Why are you mentioning two EDDs? Please note that the correct EDD is calculated by the ultrasound done during the first three months of pregnancy.
It is normal not to have labor pains and to have internal os closed at 38 weeks of pregnancy. The pregnancy duration can extend up to 42 weeks sometimes and this is normal. There is no need for her to carry those weights up and down the stairs. It is not going to help.

In my clinic if a would be mother and her baby are keeping good health and if the ultrasound is normal, I wait till 41 weeks expecting the mother to start labor spontaneously. I would do as below:
-From 36 weeks onwards I will examine the mother and fetus weekly in my clinic along with checking blood pressure and urine for protein.
- At 40 weeks pregnancy, i will perform internal examination and try to separate the fetal sac from the neck of cervix. This will release prostaglandins which help to start labor early. From 40 weeks pregnancy, I will also monitor the baby's health daily by fetal cardiotocography ( A transducer is placed on mother's abdomen to get the fetal heart tracing) for 20 minutes.

-If she does not deliver by 41 weeks of pregnancy I would admit her to induce labor artificially and deliver her. If she does not respond to induction, then I would do cesarean.

I hope I have answered your concerns. If you have any further queries do contact me through healthcare Magic
