Should I Be On Medication For High Blood Pressure?

hi my blood pressure was 140 over 110 at the doctore a week ago , he took it a week later it was 140 over 100 ,the opticition seen something in my eyes and told me to get my blood pressure checked , the doctor took loads of bloods and came back normal. should i be on medication for high blood pressure I am a 46 year old woman.

As per the clinical history provided by you, on two separate occasions your BP was recorded as 140/110 and 140/100 mm of Hg (which is indeed high). Your optician has also noted some changes in your eye (which might well be hypertensive retinopathy - end organ changes). At this stage, I would definitely advice you to start on an antihypertensive regimen. Prolonged, uncontrolled high BP may lead to end organ damage, affecting your heart, blood vessels, kidneys and eyes (in your case probable eye changes have begun).
Initially, you must go for a salt restricted diet, and start on low dose antihypertensives like Calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, cilnidipine) or ACEI/ARB. If not controlled with either of them, both of them may be taken.
I would also advise you to get your lipid profile checked and your ECG done (to rule out end organ changes in the heart). You may consult your family physician/cardiologist for initiating the drug regimen.
