Should I Be Concerned For My Fasting Blood Report Given Below?

I am 45 years old and had some fasting blood work done about 6 months ago. My cholesterol was 298 with triglycerides at 278. I know these are high but my fasting glucose was 138. Should I be concerned with this level. My dad developed type I diabetes at about 40 and my mom s brother was a type I diabetic that passed at age 42.

Hello
Any fasting sugar level above 126 mg% is labelled as diabetes.
You must repeat your blood sugar fasting and PP done along with lipid profile and kidney function tests since you were investigated 6 months back.
You should be concerned and not take the things lightly as uncontrolled diabetes leads to various microvascular and macro vascular complications.
You can avoid all these complications by meticulously controlling your blood sugar, cholesterol and doing regular exercises and reducing your weight.
Be in touch with your doctor regularly.
Thanks

Hello stearns37,

Fasting glucose of more than 126 is diabetes. But I suggest you repeat following tests :

Fasting glucose
Post meal glucose
Hba1c

If the above tests suggests diabetes, you need to start medications to avoid future complications.

Regards.

General & Family Physician Dr. Kimberly Martin's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.

Diabetes mellitus is an heriditary component that can make you susceptible to contracting this disease process.

Currently, the American Diabetes Association defines prediabetes as a fasting blood glucose level greater than 100, but less than 126. Levels greater than 126 is a diabetic state, indicating that your body is unable to utilize glucose in the body effectively.

With your increased cholesterol and triglycerides, in addition to your diabetic state, you are at increased risk for heart disease.

You should be concerned that your fasting glucose level is 138. Contact your family physician and present your concerns about the results of this test. Diabetes is a manageable disease and can be controlled through diet, exercise, and medication.

Be well,
Dr. Kimberly
