Should Depression Or Anxiety Medications Be Taken For Binging And Purging?

should I consider asking my doctor for depression or anxiety pills to help me stop bingeing and purging? I want to stop, I've been dealing with eating disorders for 9 years and no one knows. I have to deal with it by myself I just wonder if there is anything that could help my mental issue.

You have habit of binge eating and purging. Such symptoms can occur due to Bulimia Nervosa or Anorexia purging type. Both these disorders have underlying severe anxiety as reason for symptoms. To control these compulsive behaviours you should consider consulting a psychiatrist.

Yes commonly used anxiety and depression pills are mainstay of treatment in such symptoms. Drugs especially Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine are used in anorexia and bulimia. To maintain nutrition vitamin supplements are also needed. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription.

Hello,
Thanks for putting your query in HCM.
I can understand what you are going through.
If I had similar patient I would have started with antidepressant like Escitalopram 10 mg and would have gradually increased dose til symptoms subside.Also, behavioural therapy can be employed in which patient is not allowed to go to bathroom or washroom for 1 to 2 hour post food intake and in case patient has to go for nature's call, it should be under survellance.
