Should X- Rays Be Taken For The Sore And Swollen Arm Of A Three Year Old?
My three year old girl fell Saturday evening at 6:00 while standing on a low chair. She fell backwards on hard wood floor and put her right arm out to brace her fall. We were more concerned about her hitting her head than her arm, but a couple of hours later she started complaining that her arm hurt. Her complaints would seem to come and go, and it was enough for us to notice the repeat complaints a few hours after the fall, but we were not that concerned until she started waking up avery 45 minutes or an hour unconsolably crying and saying her arm hurt. Gave her some pain killer and she went back to sleep. She woke again (around 1:00am, 7 hours after the fall) crying uncontrollably and we were about to take her to ER when she fell asleep again and this time she slept through the night. Next day she occasionally mentioned arm was was sore. Nothing today. Do we need to take her for xrays if she is no longer complaining about her arm and is moving it normally? Thank you.
Hello. Thank you for your question. I am sorry about your daughter's fall. There are 3 things we should be looking at here. 1. her pain. It seems to be decreasing. 2. The movement of the arm which appears to be normal. 3. any swelling of the area. As long as the pain has decreased, any swelling is resolving, and limb movements are normal, there is no need to have her evaluated. If any of these things change, I recommend consulting with your doctor.
