Should I Take Estrogen In Order To Conceive?

I ll be 27 next week and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant seriously for the last 4 or 5 months. I went off of birth control last August and went without a period for almost 5 months then was given estrogen pills to jump start my period. I had 2 normal periods after that and now I am a few days short of being 2 months late. I have taken several HPTs over the last 2 months and all have been negative. My plan is to take another HPT next Friday if my period hasn t arrived. What is my next step, or is it just a waiting game at this point?

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

Normally, 80 percent of healthy couples will conceive within a year. The actual definition of infertility is inability to conceive for one year. Many women have irregular periods when they come off the pill, but even if you don't menstruate that doesn't mean you don't ovulate.

So I would try to be patient- if you are having regular (at least 2-3 times per week) unprotected intercourse you should conceive within one year. If after one year of serious trying then I would consider seeing an OBGYN or fertility doctor for hormone tests and an evaluation. Your husband will also need to get his sperm count checked as 50 percent of the time the male partner can also be a factor in not getting pregnant. Taking more estrogen may help you to menstruate- but it doesn't affect ovulation or help you conceive. You may want to purchase ovulation predictor kits to check when you ovulate even if you don't get a period.

I hope this information was helpful and that I adequately answered your question.

Good luck and best wishes, Dr. Brown
