If you were my patient, I would advise you to see a surgeon AFTER completing the current treatment for diverticulitis. But if you were getting worse, then see one sooner. This is because given that this s the second diverticulitis attack , it ll probably re-recur. I assume you re taking antibiotics by mouth; you may need hospitalization with IV cipro and flagyl if you re not getting better. If you were to see me as a surgeon I ll do the following: - Get a CT scan of Abdomen & pelvis - wait 6-8 weeks after this episode then do a colonoscopy - then discuss elective surgery (typically a sigmoid resection, if your diverticulitis is Left sided) - a CT scan and colonoscopy comes in to play here. Reason for elective surgery is because there s a chance that future attack(s) may cause a bowel perforation at which point, you ll need an emergency operation ending up with a stoma. An elective operation avoids the above scenario. Hope this helps.
