General Surgeon 's  Response
If you were my patient, I would advise you to see a surgeon AFTER completing the current treatment for diverticulitis. But if you were getting worse, then see one sooner. This is because given that this's the second diverticulitis "attack", it'll probably re-recur. I assume you're taking antibiotics by mouth; you may need hospitalization with IV cipro and flagyl if you're not getting better.
If you were to see me as a surgeon I'll do the following:
- Get a CT scan of Abdomen & pelvis
- wait 6-8 weeks after this episode then do a colonoscopy
- then discuss elective surgery (typically a sigmoid resection, if your diverticulitis is Left sided) - a CT scan and colonoscopy comes in to play here. Reason for elective surgery is because there's a chance that future "attack(s)" may cause a bowel perforation at which point, you'll need an emergency operation ending up with a stoma. An elective operation avoids the above scenario.

Hope this helps.
