Should Bisoprolol Fumarate Be Taken After Completely Weaning Off Propranolol?

Hi I have been on bisoprolol fumarate 5mg for about 7 years now but I have had a very persistent cough for the last 4 months so my doctor told me to come off them while investigations are carried out I advised them that I was worried about this and asked if I could reduce my dosage So I reduced it to 2.5 mg over two weeks and was on this new dosage for another two weeks then they insisted I came off I have really suffered every possible side effect going and told them to put me back on it but perhaps try a different type of beta blocker I have now just had two tablets of propranolol One yesterday 40mg and one today at 9am but I have told the doc I really perhaps should of stayed on the Bisoprolol and just cut this down slowly My question to you is that it has now been 11 hours since this last tablet am I ok to take a bisoprolol now to start me back on track Sorry about the long email hope it makes sense Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Yes, you can restart the bisoprolol. There are medications that can cause persistent cough such as the ACE inhibitors (ramipril, enalapril, lisinopril etc).

Cough is a rare side effect of the bisoprolol, occurs in three out of 100 persons who use this medications. The most common causes for chronic cough are post nasal drip, reflux and asthma. Out of these, post nasal drip is the most common with some persons not aware of the drip itself.

Since this is the most common, unless there is an obvious reflux or asthma history, treatment is normally directed at post nasal drip. That would include anti histamines/decongestants and topical steroid nasal sprays (nasonex, nasocort, flonase, rhinocort).

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
