Shin injury, nausea, bruise, swollen ankle, purple discolouration. Blood pooling?

I hit my shin in a fall against wood step it caused a pain that was so bad it made me sick to my stomach ...took a while to stand up. I hit my shin about 6 above my ankle, and slid down. My leg, from about 3 below my knee to the part that hit hard is bruised. Today I noticed that my ankle is swollen and black, blue, purple and yellow. Would that be blood pooling? Is there a need to get medical treatment...this happened 6 days ago. Thank you

Dear Concerned.,

Thanks for writing to us.

The history described by you suggests that the impact was really hard. The details of injury given by you makes me presume that it was "Abrasion Injury" started on shin 6 inches above the ankle.

The clinical features mentioned by you suggests that you should have immediately applied First Aid to the affected Part as follows (A) Cooling the area with ice /ice cold water so that the pain and the after effects as described by you would not have been this bad. (B) You should have taken Inj Tetanus Toxoid 0.5 ml IM within the first 48 hours. Even now you may consult the MD now and take the same to immunise against Tetanus.(C) Cleaning and Debridement of any open wound if it is there //cleaning as required with Sterile Normal Saline and Dressing the Same with say for Eg., Povidone Iodine ointment/powder(D) Prophylactic Antibiotics/Anti inflammatory/Analgesics (D) Investigate with X-Ray of the Part to rule out the Hairline Fracture/to ruleout any deep seated Foreign Bodies for eg wooden pieces//stone pieces// glass(radio-opaque) for a 100%/complete debridement.

Your noticing of swollen ankle and yellow is due to inflammation/the black blue purple discouration is due to extravasated blood which will get liquefied and absorbed as the fibrinolytic system of your body along with medications shall clear off the same.During sleeping kindly keep your legs up by keeping two pillows below your affected legs. This will help to reduce the swelling by helpng the drainage of accumulated fluids.

Regarding the last part of your query, there is definitely a need to consult your MD for treatment.

I hope my answer is of some help to you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.,

Best Regards.,
