Severe stomach cramps, extreme hunger feeling with cramps that eases with eating. What could the cause be?

For a few years now, i really can t remember when it first started i ve been waking up with severe stomach cramps . It s like an extreme hunger feeling with nausea . It only happens if i m awake around the hours of 2-5. I get up at 4am for work so it is really bad at that time. It is mostly upper stomach pain with sharp cramps. It goes away after i eat. If i eat late of if i eat a large meal which i rarely do i m in excruciating pain the next morning. It doesn t happen when i wake up naturally or after say 6 or 7am. But in the last few days its been occuring throughout the day. this is a new symptom for me. I m not a bit dairy or meat eater. i prefer a vegetable based diet. i dont drink alcohol, smoke or drink sodas. i did discover this morning that gatorade made me feel better and allowed me to get to work with vomiting . i usually have to eat something just so i can function

Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, it seems that you are having increased acidity and gastritis.

You should follow some precautions like :-
1. Avoid spicy/oily foods.
2. Donot miss a meal.
3. Avoid emotional/mental stress.
4. Donot self medicate especially with pain killers and steroids.
5. Donot remain empty stomach for long durations.
6. Drink lots of pure water during daytime.
7. Curd or yoghurt will help.

Also get yourself investigated for H.pylori.

If the problem persists, you can take antacid like Omeprazole 20 mg once a day along with Domperidone 10 mg for relief. Antacid in gel form is also beneficial.

I hope this is helpful to you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Zainab Hassanali's  Response
from the symptoms you have just described you are suffering from hyperacidity or ulcers
two types - h.pylori infection which can bring about the symptoms you have mentioned above and to rule it out we do a stool for h- pylori test antigen most accruate. if positive then give a kit of antibiotics and then continue with anti acids
the other is due to the foods that you take eating patterns.
to rule out if ulcers then you need to be done barium meal and endoscopy.
treatment is advise on the diet to take put on antiacids.
would suggest get reviewed by a physician for further follow up and treatment.
hope to have answered your query
get well soon and takecare.
