Hello dear,

Your presentation brings up many different possibilities in a doctors mind.

They range from typical constipation to a hernia.

If you have been experiencing this problem for a long time, you could find relief with some stool softeners. But this would not be treating the core of the problem.

A hernia is displacement of abdominal contents into a small pouch or anatomical structure, depending on type and location. One of the symptoms of a hernia is constipation, this could explain the feeling you have while moving your bowels.

If this is the case, straining while passing bowels only makes the hernia larger, and thus worse.

As you have been successfully passing gas, this cannot be a complete bowel obstruction. But, I would advice and erect abdominal x-ray, which can rule out any problem with the intestines. Before this, you should consult your doctor, who would assess your condition and advice the same if required.

An abdominal and pelvic ultrasound will help greatly. It can also help in diagnosis of a hernia (if present).

For now, the best option is not to strain while passing stools and to visit a doctor at your earliest convenience.

Hope this information has helped, please write back if you need more assistance.

Wishing you good health and a great life.
