Severe Pain, Ringing In Ear, Eardrum Inflammed, Treatment Required. Possible Problem?

Hi, last thursday i woke up in the middle of the night with really bad ear ache in my left ear but managed to get back to sleep, when i woke up in the morning most of the pain had gone but i was left with a ringing in this ear, since today the ringing has subsided slightly but i am not left with sounds and voices sounding very robotic and wurry in this ear. I went to see a doctor on monday who said the bottom of the ear drum was slightly inflamed but couldn t see any infection which required treatment. What could the problem be? Thanks

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

What you may have been suffering is an infection of the drum and the ear which is called the acute otitis media.

In the first stage of this infection you will have a severe pain due to the bulge of the drum

In the second stage when the drum gives way to the discharge you will have a relief of the pain.

Due to the discharge coming out and causing a hole in the drum, your healing will reduce and become muffled.

Now you need to do the following:
1. Get an ENT to properly clean and examine you ear drums
2. Get an audiometric assessment if necessary
3. Start an antibiotic will pain killers and anti histamines in consultation with your doctor
4. Keep the ear dry and clean and make sure no water enters into it

do not meddle or try to clean the ears by yourself

take care and get well soon
