Severe Pain After Taking Atorvastatin. History Of Being On Pravastatin. Cholestrol 180, Low Bp. Statin Drugs Needed?

My doctor has put me on Atorvastatin and in two days I am in such pain I cannot stand it. I was on pravastatin prior to this drug. In June I had to go away for a month and forgot to take the drug with me. I had no pain the whole time I was away. I don't think I should take statin drugs even if my cholestrol is at 180. my blood pressure is low and that is good I think. I used to take red rice yeast and this doctor says it is no good. please give me your opinion.
thank you, Wendy

Hello,
Thanks for your query.

What i would suggest is you stop taking atorvastatin for 1 week time, if the pain subsides than you can be assured that the pain is due to statin. If pain still persists than there may be other cause of pain.

But since you were already on pravastatin & did not have any side effects so atorvastatin should not cause any problem.

If strict dietary changes & active lifestyle is followed than cholesterol levels of 180 can be brought down to normal levels. So discuss with your doctor. He may even decrease the dose of medicines if the pain is due to medicines.

Take care.
