Severe Osteoporosis, Breathing Difficulties. Using Forteo Injection. Are Symptoms Like Dizziness, Nausea The Side Effects?

Hello

My mum, who is 82, is about to commence treatment for severe oesteoporosis using Forteo daily injections. She had 2 6-monthly injections of Prolia but developed breathing difficulties, even though I was told this was not a side effect. However, further injections were not given, just in case. Having read the side effects of Forteo ie bone cancer, dizziness, nausea I am just a little concerned about my mum starting this treatment. Can you please put my mind at rest. Many thanks. Trish

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Forteo (Teriparatide) is a synthetic analogue of Human parathyroid hormone (PTH) used to treat osteoporosis in post menopausal age who are particularly at high risk of sustaining fractures.

Forteo does not make the complete treatment for osteoporosis. This should be supplemented by dietary changes, exercise, vitamins and mineral supplements etc.

It has been shown in experimental animals that there is a "risk" of bone cancer. This risk has not been established in human volunteers. Many drugs will produce numerous side effects but one should always assess the "risk-benefit" ratio associated with that particular drug.

So I suggest you to follow your treating doctors advice.

Hope this helps
