Severe Ear Infection, Bones In Ear Decayed, Hearing Issues. Done Surgery To Remove Bones. Can Surgery Be Done In Other Ear Too?

I am a 59 year old female and had severe inner ear infections which affected my hearing--a lot. About 25 years ago an ear Dr. in Kissimmee, FL examined my ears and told me that the bones in my right ear were decayed to to many infections. He performed a surgery where in removed the bones, flipped them over so the other side were now exposed. Sugery took about 3 years and was covered by insurane. Now, 25 years later, they have finally stopped working and because I imagine that my left ear has the same decay to the 3 bones, I am having a very hard time hearing,,,at all. I would like the same surgery done to my left ear rather than just getting a hearig aid--but the ear dr. I saw about 3 years ago didn't seem to know much about that surgery and was more worred about my nose having been broken years and giving me a "deviated septim" My question is, can the original surgery be done on my left ear? Thank you! Candyce Collins

hi,
ear has three parts, inner, middle, and outer. inner ear is neuronal, middle ear is mechanical conduction of sound and amplification with the help of bones and outer ear just reception and transmission.
now your middle ear in both ears have been damaged. right ear it is decayed and removed. left ear surgery can be done if there is problem in outer/middle ear. if inner ear problem is there then, hearing aid can be kept.

i hope i solved your doubt.

wish you good health.

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Since you had problem in right ear, its not necessary to have same problem with left ear, you need to get examined for your reduced hearing, weather its due to conductive or nerve problem. based on that treatment options can be decided.
Need to get your ear examined for any infection, pure tone audiometry.
Deviated nasal septum could be a reason for recurrent ear infection, so cause needs to be corrected first.
Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Vidya
