Scanty Flow During Periods, Light Flow Followed By Dark Brown Discharge. Negative Pregnancy Tests. Pregnancy Chance?

Hi I have a quick question. My last two periods have been strange. I had unprotected sex with my husband on the 8th of december. I expected my period on the 22nd of december. It came but not only was it light but it also only lasted a little over 24 hours. then it went to a dark brown very light discharge on what would be the 3rd day. I was due to start my next period on the 19th of January however it came 2 days early and once again it lasted only about a day and then went to the brown discharge for the 3rd day.I have never had periods this short before. they usually last 4-5 days. i m 22 years old and have had my period since I was 11 so I know when its normal and when its not lol. Could i be pregnant? I ve taken 2 tests around 2 weeks ago but both have come back negative.

hi there, what you described sounds like implantation bleed but your pregnancy test should have been positive, untill and unless it was a blighted ovum. You need to get a serum B_HCG levels and also get a ultrasound abdomen done and if required a transvaginal USG to rule out a missed abortion or an extrauterine pregnency. Take care.

Hello Kirsten,

Thank you for posting on HCM
From your description you are having abnormal per vaginal bleeding which could be due to a good number of reasons. It is possible that you could be pregnant ( given your description) and having 1st trimester bleeding (spotting). This is common in some women. If you had unprotected sex with your husband 14 days to your next period, then your chances of getting pregnant at that period are greatly increased. Given the spotting nature of your bleeding, it can is possible for 1st trimester bleeding due to the pregnancy ( early signs of placenter previa? but not specific). 2 pregnancy test done too early is normal they are negative because beta hCG in urine has not yet reached detectable levels by the pregnancy urine test strip. If you want immediate clarification, you will need another pregnancy test but with dosage of beta hCG in blood ( this will show immediate increased levels if you are pregnant) and/or do a pelvic ultrasound ( you will need to see a gynobs). If you are unable to do those now, just wait for about a week and redo the urine pregnancy test again and if negative, then be rest assured that pregnancy is not the issue.
There can be other possible causes of abnormal menstrual flow such as infection (given the brown discharge), and other uterine diseases which would have to be identify by your gynobs.

Hope this helps and wish you the best.
