Root canal done, swelling, pain in upper left quadrant. Cure for swelling and pain?

I had root canal done 36 hours ago on no 12 tooth . swelling and pain in that region is coming back. It is supposed to get better. I have an appointment in 10 days to do permanent fill of the root canal. is this normal process? Last week my dentist thought my upper left quadrant maybe hurting because of Sinus infection . And after 3 days of miserable pain, she recommended me to endodontic , who did the root canal 36 hours ago.

Hello and welcome to hcm forum,

As you said, after root canal treatment has done, the swelling and pain re-occurs.
This is due to the infected pulp and pus remaining within the pulp canal due to improper biomechanical preparation.
The pain can also be due to overextended filling or Sinus infectio/ledge formation/perforation.
Re-rct may relieve the pain.
If the symptoms persists,Extraction/apicoectomy is idicated.
Meanwhile apply ice packs on the affected area.

Thanks for posting the query,

Pain and swelling indicates infection in the tooth that had spread to the adjoining tissues leading to the formation of periodontal abscess . This can also be because of perforation of canal at the time of biomechanical preparation of the canal or due to sinus infection.

Take antibiotics and analgesic for pain relief , this will give a temporary relief .
Get the root canal procedure completed after 10 days as you said.
Unless the tooth is devitalised , disinfected and sealed to the apex you may experience pain and infection .

At home take saline water garlges which will give a soothing effect.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.

Hope this helps out.

Pain after RCT can be because of re-infection of tooth leading to periapical abscess formation leading to infection and inflammation of the adjacent tissues .
Get complete clinical examination of the tooth done by a dentist .Take x-ray of the tooth.
Get complete mouth scaling and polishing done .
Use saline water gargles 3-4 times a day
Use 0.2% of chlorhexidine mouthwash solution gargles twice daily .
Pain can be because of sinus infection . Visit a ENT Specialist for treatment of sinusitis .

hello there ,

Root canal procedure is done in 2 or 3 steps to remove the infected tooth nerve tissue and disinfect the tooth completely.

Any remnant nerve tissue present in the root canal of the tooth may lead to pain and discomfort in the tooth and jaws .

once the tooth is debrided completely , it is cleansed and disinfected to remove all the remnants and the root canals are filled with permanent sealing material .

this procedure devitalises the tooth completely so there is no question of pain and infection once the root canal is completed successfully and the tooth is filled with a permanent restoration.

meantime you need to take a course of antibiotic and analgesic to relieve the pain and swelling.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

usually pain subsides after the 1st appointment of root canal when the access opening is done and pulp is extirpated
now since you are complaining of swelling and pain in that region , two possible things may have happened
1.some pus or infection still remains in the canal or there may be a perforation done , if thats the case you would need to revisit your dentist even prior to your appointment
2. but before that you may try one thing , there is much possibility that you would have been given a local anesthesia before the root canal procedure and this shot of anesthesia commonly causes pain and numbness after 24 hours of injetion
so what i would suggest that you do luke warm saline rinses followed by cold pack application for 6-8 times a day
if you are relieved in a day or two than good or else call your dentist and get an appointment fixed
best of luck

Welcome to HCM forum,
This swelling and pain can be due to residual pulp tissue left in the canal.
And sinus infection is due to abscess in 12. So consult dentist for radiographical examination of the offending tooth.
Follow antibiotic prescription.
Maintain oral hygiene.
Take care
