Rib Injury, Painful. X-ray Shows Bruised Ribs. Pain Medicine Ineffective. What Could This Be?

Hi, I was at a concert in the mosh pit last week (Saturday night Sunday Morning). I got hit or shoved and basically landed on a concrete floor. Didnt feel anything, got up and a few minutes later noticed that ouch my ribs hurt. Anyways next day Monday sore thinking bruised ribs. Tuesday I was in extreme pain. Went to an Urgent Care Wednesday morning. They did X Rays and said its bruised ribs and maybe I got my liver. Thursday, today I woke up with minimal pain. Toward the middle of the day started to feel pressure on my right rib cage with extreme pain. It felt like a balloon was blowing up inside me. I also was feeling this pain in my back also even though at the doctors I wasnt. The pain medicine they gave me is not even touching this pain a bit. I am gonna call them tomorrow. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
From your query i understood that, your pain medicine is ineffective for you.
Because you have injury in chest wall.
Chest wall muscles are respiratory muscles.
They are attached to the ribs and is always working to maintain proper respiration.
Thats why you feel your pain medication are ineffective.
Codeine type pain killers may be useful if NSAIDS are not helpful.

Proper chest physiotherapy is essential to avoid lung infections.

If you feel your pain is very severe, You can have nerve block with local anaesthetic in the area of injury.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally , the soft tissue injury and bruising will take around 1-2 weeks to settle down and return to normalcy.

An injured rib will produce excruciating pain on coughing, sneezing and during deep inspirations. You should avoid lying down on the injured side.

Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours on the injured area which will alleviate pain. Use analgesic & antiinflammatory medications as needed.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
