Hi Ebonny,

Welcome to HCM.
Yes retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically aquired disease, in which the affected person has gradually diminishing vision. The field of vision gradually decreases resulting in tube vision, i.e. as if looking through a long tube, side vision is completely lost. It may or may not culminate in complete loss of vision.
Unfortunately there is no guaranteed method to prevent genetically inherited defects, at present, though research in genetic engineering is progressing at a fast pase.
Wish you all the best and hope for the best.

hello,
most hereditary diseases cannot be stopped from passing down to the chidren.
however early diagnosis and treatment will help to reduce complications.
in this there is progressive degeneration of the retina, specifically of the light receptors, known as the rods and cones. The rods of the retina are involved earlier in the course of the disease, and cone deterioration occurs later.
visual field tests and electroretinogram will help diagnose this condition early.
food rich in vitamin a and e and omega 3 rich diets will help.
i hope i have answered your query.
take care
