Red And Watery Eyes, Pain In Eyes, Sensitive To Light, Swollen Eyelid. No Help From Taking The Contacts Out. Suggest

My husband wears contacts, this mornin he woke up and his eye slowly became red and watery. He says it is very painful and is sensitive to light. His eyelid is swollen. Style lubrication helps a little but he says it still hurts a lot. Nothing is helping the pain and he has taken his contact out and it still doesn't help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hi and thanks for the query,
This could be an indication of an infection causing an inflammation of the outer surface or covering of the eye ball called conjonctivitis. Treatment could involve use of local anti inflammatory drugs like nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug drops and steroid drops. Adding an antibiotic eye drop like Gentamycin or any Quinolone topially could be of immense help. I suggest you urgently consult a primary care physician for review and management. Thanks and kind regards.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Khushbu Bhattad's  Response
hello mam,
welcome to HCM
your husband probably has contact lens induced keratitis. Symptoms of contact lens-related infections include blurry vision, redness and pain of the eye, tearing or discharge from the eye, increased light sensitivity or the sensation of something in your eye.
he should avoid contacts for 15 days,
you have to start vigamox eye drop along with refresh tears for lubrication in his eyes.
steroids are contraindicated
if he is having sensitivity of light with pain, cycloplegic like tropicacyl have to be started but remember it causes temporary blurring of vision but it will stop his pain.
wear dark googles in sun light.
its advisable that him to visit an ophthalmologist for thorough eye examination and start treatment immediately
take care i hope i answered your query
you can ask further queries.
