Reason For Swelling In The Foot?

I suffered a fall on April 10. I tried to treat my foot with soaking it in epsom salt in warm water for 30 minutes followed by ice water for 45 minutes only once a day. I am on my feet most of the day. It did not get better so on April 18 I had a x-ray done which showed the fifth metatarsal had a fracture. Why is the whole foot still swollen and not just the area of the fracture? The urgent care facility gave me a referral to an emergency room and sent me on my way after doing nothing other than taking the x-ray. I am 61 if that makes any difference.

I have gone through your complaints and understand your concern.
Any fracture in foot can cause the whole foot to swell.Fifth metatarsal fracture definitely needs attentionIf the fracture is minor,undisplaced,plaster immobilisation should be enough. If its displaced,it may require surgical intervention.
