Purple-red sore tissue band anterior to palate with runny nose, sore throat, extreme fatigue, no fever. What could this be?

My son has a purple-red band of tissue , just anterior to the palate . There are no ulcers or bumps. It is sore, though not severely. He was ill last week with a runny nose, sore throat (not in the same area or appearance) and extreme fatigue (slept in 12-14 hour sessions). There is no fever, could this be the start of a secondary bacteria infection or another virus.
