Pregnant Prescribed With Gestin. Is It Safe For The Baby?

my gynecologist has prescribed gestin tablet twice a day.I am 6 weeks pregnant now.I do not have any specific medical condition as such.will it be harmful for my baby and me.He asked me to take those tablets for four months. please advice as I understand that it is a progesterone tablet.Why should I take tablets if everything is normal?

Hi,
You are right. There is no need for progesterone supplementation in a normal pregnancy unless indicated otherwise. If your doctor has prescribed the medication, you should ask him the reason for the prescription; progesterone supplements are given whenever a threatened abortion is suspected and in precious pregnancies with a suspected corpus luteal defect.
