Pregnant, US Showed Fullness Of Kidney Of Baby. Evaluate Meaning?

Hi, I'm 35 weeks 4 days pregnant & as per the ultrasound yesterday baby's weight is 2.6gms but it says the right kidney show fullness with bulging of renal pelvis, which is measuring 9 to 10 mm for postnatal follow up scan. Lower uterine segment (4.9mm) within normal limits. Please advice whether this is a very serious problem & how will it effect to the baby?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

The weight of your baby must be 2.6 kg which is within normal limits.

Studies have been done in this area and renal pelvis measurements in pregnancy at 35 weeks was tabulated as those 7–9.9 mm, 10–14.9 mm and ≥ 15 mm were classified as mild dilatation, moderate hydronephrosis and severe hydronephrosis, respectively.

Subsequently it was seen that none of the 20 children with mild dilatation experienced a urinary tract infection (UTI) or underwent surgery; two had associated renal or urinary tract abnormalities.

As you have written 9-10 mm I will take it as mild grade.
This may not be a serious problem but postnatal ultrasound becomes very important.

Hope this helps

OBGYN Dr. Rubee Khattar's  Response
Such fullness in renal pelvis of the fetus usually are a transitory dilatation seen during the scan. It will require a postnatal ?(after birth)full ultrasound evaluation.
significant causes that will be considered if this persists after birth are:
1.reflux of urine back to the kidneys i.e. VUR
2. Obstruction of the kidney at the level of pelvis (UPJO)
both these conditions require follow up wit a urologist/pediatric surgeon
good luck
