Pregnant. Pain in right upper back, under rib cage. Cramps in stomach when I pee. How to cure?

Hi. I am 15 weeks pregnant and have pretty severe pain in my right upper back and in my right side of my stomach right under my rib cage. The past week I have had issues not being able to urinate at night. I was able to pee this morning but only after about an hour of being awake. Cramps in stomach on right side when I do pee

Thanks for writing to us.
The pain that you are having on urination is likely to be related to a urinary tract infection. You need to get an ultrasound scan and a routine urine test done to find out the exact cause of the pain you are having.

General & Family Physician Dr. Luchuo Engelbert Bain's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
Right upper back pain, especially in pregnancy should give a suspicion of pyelonephritis. Pregnancy is a risk factor to develop urinary tract infections. It is absolutely important to exclude this. I suggest you do a urinary dip stock, urine culture and sensitivity tests. A clinical evaluation shall very appropriate to exclude a lung infection that could also present itself as such.
Based on the clinical assessment, your treating physician will decide on either prescribing an ultrasound or not. Taking an appointment with your obstetrician is appropriate. If the appointment can take so long, going to the primary care physician or emergency room could be appropriate.
Thanks and hope this helps.
