Pre Diabetic, Has Venous Insufficiency, Mild Edema In Lower Legs, Numbness In Both Hands. Reason ?
Hi im 38 yrs old, pre diabetic and has venous insufficiency. I have mild edema in my lower legs almost everyday esp towards the afternoon( almost 1 year now). Blood sugar is normal. Ive been taking thyroid hormones also so thyroid function is normal. Just a few days i experience numbness in both hands extending to just below the elbow. at first it was only one hand. Then for two nights now, i wake up in the middle of the night with a numb feeling in both hands. I still function properly. So far no pain. But it worries me. I asked my sister who is a doctor and tells me it may be a pinched nerve. She prescribed dolo neurobin 3 times a day for 7 days which i started taking just yesterday. What could be wrong? Should i go to a specialist? Thanks
I am so sorry to hear about what you have been experiencing with your hands and all the diseases that you are being managed for.
From the symptoms you have reported about the hands waking you up mostly at night, the suspicion of carpal tunnel syndrome is high on my list of possible causes. This pains often affect the 31/2 fingers counting from the thumb most and can be reproduced by hyper flexing the hand at the wrist for 1-2minutes. Neurobin would undoubtedly offer some relief. However, treatment for this condition consist of relieving the hand of unnecessary pressure especially at the wrist by avoiding bending the hand during sleep or lying on it. If this fails, then maybe administering direct steroid into the hand followed by surgical release if it fails.
My best advice is that you need t consult your doctor, mention this as a possible cause so that he can look into and help you with it.
I hope this helps and provides real guidance on how to continue this search for a permanent solution. I wish you well. Please, feel free to ask us more questions if need be. Dr. Ditah, MD
