Please Suggest Treatment For Swelling Due To Jab In The Eye?

Hi, our 7-year old Son got poked in the eye during recess about 48-hours ago. We think it was more of a "jab", his entire eye-socket area was extremely sore. Yesterday evening, his eye started to swell. Today the eye is almost swollen shut and extremely painful. It's Saturday. We hate to take him to ER, thinking what will they do for him? Had ice pack on it, doesn't seem to be helping. If his vision is in danger or we should take him in, we will. Very odd, that it would swell like this 2 days later. Thank you for any feedback.

Hello,

Since the exact nature of injury is not known, it could have been a blunt injury with a bruise but the onset of pain is something which needs to be addressed immediately. It could be a incidental internal hordeolum ( internal stye) or pre-septal cellulitis or even orbital cellulitis ( infection from adjacent sinuses). This would not only require immediate diagnosis but treatment in the form of oral antibiotics ( such as pediatric dose of Augmentin). Since we do not know which of these is actually there, it is better to get him examined at the earliest ( atleast an early start of antibiotics can prevent any further spread of infection).

Regards
