Pass smelly wind after having wine or spirits. Remedy?

When i go on a night out whether I drink wine or spirits i get very bad extremely smelly wind like bad eggs :( The more stressed I get because others notice and comment the worse it is. And yet if I drink during a meal or at home this doesnt happen. It was very bad with vodka and redbull or coke. Is there some digestive aid i could take or another drink which wouldnt have this effect?

Hi Amanda,
Thanks for writing in.
I think we could be looking at several possibilities here. these can be ruled out only after we run some tests for you. These would include:
a. Lactose intolerance: This would be a possibility even if you have been tolerating milk well all your life. Try and stop milk for a couple of days and see if it helps. You can take yoghurt instead.
b. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease- You might consider using Tablet Prevacid OTC once daily one hour before breakfast. Try this for 7-8 days and see if it helps
c. Small bowel bacterial overgrowth- You could just have an overgrowth of bacteria in your gut which could be leading to your symptoms. A regimen of ciprofloxacin should help. This needs to be diagnosed after several investigations.
I would suggest that you follow the above advice for 2-3 weeks. If your symptoms still dont improve, see your physician and get tested for small bowel bacterial overgrowth.
Hope this helps

Hi welcome to HCMForum. Most probably your problem is olfactory hallucination or smell of a compound formed by
combination of face powder or deodorant or some thing of that sort. i advise you to consult a physician for diagnosis
