Painful Urination, Blood In Urine

my boyfriend was complaining about pain before urination , and had said on multiple occasions that something weird had occured. he explained it as a painful urination and then looked down into the toilet and saw an almost fibrous red squiggle that apparently he had passed during urination. I am quite concerned, because i don t believe that is normal. so if you could give me some answers that would be fantastic.
