Pain While Urinating, Warm Urine, Screaming Badly. What's Wrong ?

For the past two weeks my eight week old son screams toward the end of bath just before and as he pees. Today he didn t pee in the bath and didn t cry at all. But soon as I put his diaper on he screamed horribly and I noticed warmth from his pee. He has been wanting me to hold him ever since and about 2 hours later he started screaming out of nowhere so I felt his diaper and it s warm again. This time his screaming was extremely worse and lasted at least ten minutes. What s wrong with my baby? :(

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

If you have noticed your sons discomfort especially related to when he passes urine, this could be a urinary tract infection. The symptoms are: burning sensation while urinating, pain in lower abdomen, frequent urination, chills, and even fever. Do not worry, as this is a simple condition and common in children using diapers.

This still has to be confirmed with a simple urine analysis. Thus, I request you to please visit a pediatrician at the earliest and get his urine examined. Once the presence of an infection is confirmed, this can be treated with antibiotic therapy and mild pain management medication. Once the treatment is initiated, your son should find relief within 24 -48 hours, maximum.

In the meantime, please give him plenty of water to drink and even cranberry juice if tolerated and available. Try to change his diapers regularly, and try to keep the area clean and dry. Do not let urine stagnate in his diaper for long, if possible, avoid the use of a diaper till your son is better.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
