Pain In Side Of Face, Jaw, Headaches. It Is Impacted Wisdom Tooth Or Gum Infection. Solution?

I woke up with the right side of my face and jaw, and t most awful headache, all on the right side, It's the weekend and I need first aid, I don't know if it's an impacted wisdom tooth, a split tooth, in the gum infection, or in the jaw. My mother recommended that I call the dentist even if it's the weekend; that I stop in the pharmacy and aask the pharmacist for over the counter first aid, and that I rinse with saltwater;
I am miserable. what should I do?

Thanks for contacting H.C.M.

If you are of the age group 17-24 years, an erupting or impacted wisdom tooth could be a cause to your pain. But evaluation of the other teeth of that region is also necessary to rule out any deep exposed caries or fractured tooth which is usually associated with such an acute pain.

Meanwhile, you could take the following medication for your pain relief:
1) Amoxycillin 500mg tab twicw daily
2) Aceclofenac 50mg+paracetamol 500mg---1 tab twice daily (could be taken upto 3 times in case the pain is higher but keep an interval of 6-8 hours between two doses.)

Warm saline rinsing would be helpful if the pain is due to wisdom tooth.

Hope the above information is helpful.

Welcome to HCM forum. Pain in face and jaw along with headache is not uncommon in case of a dental infection of any form. You have to visit dentist as soon as possible to diagnose the cause of your pain as it is impossible to find out the source of your pain from here. In the mean time you can take paracetamol 1gm as and when required to relieve your pain. Salt water rinse will not resolve your pain anyway. If you have a facial swelling you may need to start an antibiotic like amoxicillin 500 mg every 8 hourly, but it is wise to consult your dentist before that.

Hello,

Thanks for choosing HCM,

I feel either your wisdom tooth is on the way of euption or there may be carious tooth for which you are getting pain and headache is due to same nerve supply....don't be worried...its common...

You consult with Dentist and proper clinacal as well as radiological evaluation is required...

Do warm saline rinses 7-8 times/day...

Don't apply any hot fomentation from outside...

Take proper course of antibiotic and analgesic under prescription...

Don't take any hard, spicy food on that side...

Treatment plan will be decided on the basis of x-ray report...

Wish you good health....

hi...
thanks for the query...
well... medicines alone won't help... cause of the pain has to be evaluated...
so, visit your dentist for proper clinical examination...
such type of pain is usually due to two reasons: due to wisdom tooth... or due to deep carious lesion...
if deeply carious lesion, it might require root canal treatment...
in case its due to wisdom tooth then, your dentist will irrigate and clean the area ... he will clean the area between your tooth and overlying gum... this space usually has tendency to harbor food debris... he will also make the area out of occlusion by slightly grinding the tooth in opposite arch, if required...
also go for proper course of antibiotics and analgesic drugs... do warm saline rinse 6-7 times per day...
after symptoms subside, go for radiographic analysis... if sufficient space seems to be available for the tooth to erupt, then allow it do so by excising or removing the gum part called operculectomy...
if space doesn't seems to be available, then go for its extraction without any doubt...
take care...

thank you for sharing your concern in HCM forum
this is the time to listen your mom , visit a dentist soon
salt water rinses alone wont help
either your wisdom tooth is erupting or there may be any carious lesion
visit a dentist for clinical and radio logical evaluation to identify the cause.
meanwhile you can start with amoxicillin containing drugs and analgesics
but it will be better to start medicines after consulting dentist
take care

Hi,

Thanks for aksing the query,

According to your clinical symptoms i suppose that you are having pain due to the erruption of the wisdom tooth, a thorough clinical examination by am Oral Surgeon is required also take an OPG radiograph.
I would like to tell you that wisdom tooth is the last tooth to errupt in the oral cavity and is often impacted, malaligned in position, and causes radiating pain in the jaws, face and headache.
Take a course of antibiotics and analgesics under the prescription of your Dentist.
At home take lukewarm saline and antiseptic mouthwash rinses.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.

Hope this helps out,

Regards..
