Pain In Jaws While Opening Wide, Cyst Like Protrusion Just Anterior To Ear. What Could This Be ?

my son is 12 yrs old and for the last 3 weeks has been complaining that his jaw hurts. This week he said that he opened his mouth wide to yawn when something popped. I noticed that there is a cyst like protrusion just anterior to his ear. It is clearly visible and is approx 2cm. No complaints of pain but he says it has become larger. What could this be?

Hi and welcome,
After reading your history i suspect there is infection of salivary gland either it can be parotid gland swelling caused by PAROTITIS or there is some infection in the jaw bone leading to formation of a cyst or an absces which protrudes extra orally.
i would suggest to approach a surgeon and get an OPG radio graph done which will show the exact cause, extent of cyst and its association with the adjacent vital structures.
Accordingly the cyst can be enucleated to remove the entire sac along with cystic lining surgically to prevent any reoccurences. or if it is parotitis it can be treated with medication.

i think u should not take this lightly, as it really may be a cyst. or displaced or fracture condyle head of the mandible. u first need to get an x ray done OPG and based on it other diagnosis or treatment. do not sleep over it
