Pain In Groin And Hip Tissue. Have Tendon Release And Also An Arthroscopy. Relief For Bilateral Calf Tissues?

Hi I have been suffering from bi-lateral calf issues brought on by my running. I played football for many years where I suffered groin and hip issues on my left side. I have had an aductor tendon release and also an arthroscopy on the hip. My real problem is however after soccer when I started running marathons. My calfs without warning would feel like they would tear. Sometimes the left sometimes the right. The frequency of this started at around every 6 months, then 3, then monthly and now I struggle to run at all with out a flare up. I have had an MRI on the lower back a few years ago which did not reveal much. I have treid everything from chiro, physio, osteo and the problem still presents. My core is strong and glutes also. I am 33 and 85 kgs. I would love to be able to run again one day Thanks Ben

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

It is good to note the positive attitude of yours in the history. I feel that your problem is due to over straining of your calf muscles during the game, and its practice sessions. Unknowingly, there might have been some minor tears of muscle fibres which fibrosed without proper healing due to repeated unnoticed trauma. If I were your doctor, I would advise you to give complete rest to your legs and do not go for any activity which puts pressure on your calf muscles. This way the minor tears and hematoma will get time to heal properly, and after the symptoms are subsided, you should go for a gradual graded exercise programme under the supervision of a sports medicine specialist. This way I hope we should see you running again in the tracks upto some extent though completer return to normal might take a long time.

You might add Vitamin E to your medicine list for a very short period, after consulting your treating doctor, which is supposed to help in calf muscle pains.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef

Hi, Mr Ben, Welcome to Health care magic forum.
You have seen many of the specialists, but you have neglected the specialist in you. You are 33 years of age, and 85 kgs of weight.
There is every possibility of the presence of the cholesterol, and atherosclerosis, may be the starting. If you can controle it, you can win the race.
Other possibility is the osteoarthritis due to the over weight. or may be fibromyalgia, but the presentation will be different.
I usually to my patient with such symptoms prescribe neurotropic injections for 10 consecutive days, and then periodically.
Avoid taking potato, other tubers, tomato, egg, chicken, and sea foods for some time.
wishing for a quick and complete recovery. Thank you.
