Pain In Forehead, Bad Wet Cough, Fever, Runny Nose And Nose Bleeds. Can Mold Cause This Problem ?

my 4 year old son had a pain in his forhead on sunday then the next day he woke up with a bad wet cough slight fever runny nose and began with nose bleeds out of his right nostril . Hes had nose bleeds off on for 2 years now, but since he got this cold or whatever hes gotten a nose bleed at least once everyday this week even twice in one day always from the same nostril. Went to the doctors said he had an ear infection and throat infection he gave me some antibiotics to take one for 5 days and the other for 7. yesterday he had no nose bleeds but today he had one but this time from the other nostril now i know this is normal in some children and especially since hes sick, and my house is pretty dry we have a humidifier in his room as well as some pots with water filled up but the cough is persistent and the nose bleeds scare me and frustrate him. I dont know what todo hes missed a week of school already. The other thing is the house we live in is pretty old and seems to have some black mold in the washroom along the corners of the ceiling and frame around the door and i have this bad feeling that the mold is the cause of all this i just want him to get better.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

First of all let me mention that nose bleed is very common in kids in this age group and in most of the cases you have nothing to worry about. However it is always advisable to undergo a complete assessment to be on the safe side:
1. Get an ENT to do a complete examination including an endoscopy if possible and also CT of the nose to get a complete and better picture
2. Perform a complete blood testing including a coagulation profile so that the causes due to the problems in the blood can be ruled out
3. Make sure that he never picks on his nose and make sure his nails are always well kept and never sharp as the skin of the nose is very very delicate and even a small trauma can cause severe bleeding
4. Make sure he never sleeps in the direct blast of the AC or the fan
5. Impress upon the ENT to know the condition of his tonsils and adenoids which are the common causes of nose bleed in this age group
6. He may need to be started on treatment of reflux for proper control of his cough.
7. Since you have rightly opined about his surroundings, they are very important and need to be as clean as possible. Although the mold usually causes allergy and frequent infection which may or may not cause nose bleed but it pays to be safe

take care and try steam inhalation once in a while
