I GET A PAIN IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY RIB CAGE AS I AM DRINKING COLD FLUID OR EVEN SOMETIMES AS I AM EATING - IT RADIATES UNDER MY ARMPIT - I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH H PYLORI AND ALSO WENT TO LUNG SPECIALIST - HAD CHEST X-RAY, DOCTOR WHO READ IT SAID IT MAY BE UNDERYING COPD, BUT LUNG DOCTOR SAID I DON'T COUGH ENOUGH AND HE DIDN'T THINK SO, BUT DID RECOMMEND THAT I GO AHEAD AND DO ENOSCOPY FOR H PYLORI AND ALSO COLONOSCOPY - NEED ANOTHER OPINION??? THANK YOU. MARY
Hello and welcome to HCM, An upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy is needed to confirm the diagnosis of H. pylori infection. In upper GI endoscopy, a biopsy will be taken from the stomach and duodenum. This biopsy is processed, stained and viewed under the microscope to look for H. pylori. H. pylori is a bacteria which causes gastrirtis and long standing cases can also cause lymphoma. Once detected, anti H. pylori treatment can be instituted. The therapy is very effective and clears the infection completely.
The pain under the rib cage radiating to the arm pit can be due to gastrirtis since, gastritis can cause pain in any part of upper abdomen.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
